Big ups to Kelly's girls for winning a dogfight in Bristol. They say that teams are a reflection of their head coach, and tonight down 16-2 early the Lady Indians showed the kind of calm poise that I've seen from Robin over the years. JJK went to the press and really wore the Lady Bearcats out down the stretch. I can honestly say that Brewer played as fine a defensive game as I have seen (boys or girls) in a long time. She either stripped, deflected,or stole the basketball more times than not when the Lady Bearcat guards were bringing it up. Brewer and Kilgore were MUCH quicker than the VHS ladies. As much basketball as I have seen over the years, this was my first trip to the Bearcat Den. What a nice facility to see a game at. I'm looking forward to JJK-Lee at Lebanon. It's going to be a barn-burner.
Oh yeah the officiating? I wonder what will happen first: I'll see a well-reffed game or the Cubbies will win the Series? It reminds me why LPD teams struggle upstate with officiating. Guys it isn't just bad, because I can handle/am used to that, but it is the inconsistency that kills me. One trip up and they let 'em beat the brakes off each other, and the next they are calling the tic-tackers.
Congrats Lady Indians on beating a tough VHS squad in a tough place to play. Here's hoping the boys can do the same tomorrow night. BTW-Congrats to PV on a fine season as well. Those ladies have nothing to be ashamed of. Just to be at regions for that program is a reminder just how far that program has come. Congrats to the Lady Raiders as well.
BRISTOL, Va. – It began as a blow out and turned into a comeback, before finally settling on a war of attrition.
But in the end, the No. 6-seed J.J. Kelly Indians weathered 24 turnovers and a 12-point first-quarter deficit to pull out a 48-43 upset win over the No. 3 Virginia High Bearcats in the first round of the Region D, Division 2 tournament at the Bearcat Den.
After holding John I. Burton to only two points in the first quarter of the Lonesome Pine District championship game, the Indians suffered the same offensive futility in the first eight minutes of Tuesday’s matchup with the Bearcats.
The main source of Kelly’s lack of scoring was its nine first-quarter turnovers.
“We knew they were going to come out and get in our face and we just had to get settled down,” Kelly coach Robin Dotson said. “We’re lucky the lead wasn’t bigger.”
The Indians’ second-quarter comeback was spearheaded by a flip-flop in the turnovers column. A full-court press and senior Jaydee Brewer’s quick hands forced 12 Bearcat turnovers in the second quarter and led to 22 points for Kelly (19-7).
Down 14-2 after the first quarter, the Indians trailed by just one, 24-25, heading into halftime.
“With the way we played in the district [tournament] we knew we would come out and play with a lot of heart,” said Brewer, who finished with a game-high 17 points and six steals. “We just didn’t want it to be over in the first round, we wanted to keep going and that really motivated us.”
The Indians’ defense kept going in the second half, but so did the Bearcats’ D.
In the second half, the teams combined to force 21 turnovers; 10 on Kelly’s side and 11 on Virginia High’s.
The game remained close until the final three minutes, when the Bearcats’ offense ran out of steam. Savannah Pippin, who was the lone Virginia High (16-8) player to finish in double-digit points with 13, scored the team’s only points in that span – a 3-pointer with 9.7 seconds remaining and the Bearcats down 47-40.
“I think they got a little more tired than we did,” Dotson said. “They weren’t getting to the basket with it. We were able to play a few more people in the post than they were late in the second half.”
Those post players were led by Leigh Lawson and freshman 6-footer Allison Mullins, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, even though the pair played most of the final quarter with four fouls apiece.
Kelly’s win prolongs a string of good play from the Indians, who upset LPD regular season champion Burton on Saturday and will ride a six-game winning streak into Thursday’s semifinal matchup with Lee High at Lebanon High School.
The Indians have already defeated the Generals twice this season.
